The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced the appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as the new Super Eagles Technical Advisor, albeit on an interim basis.
As stated in the press release issued on Sunday, Eguavoen, who is currently the Technical Director of the NFF, will resume his Super Eagles duties with immediate effect.
This follows the termination of the relationship with the Franco-German Gernot Rohr.
Rohr has been in charge of the three-time African champions for the past 64 months, and is the longest-serving coach in Nigeria.
The NFF in its official press release said that following a virtual meeting of its Executive Committee on Sunday, it was decided that Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (head coach); Paul Aigbogun (assistant coach); Joseph Yobo (assistant coach); Terry Eguaoje (assistant coach) and Aloysius Agu (goalkeeping coach).
Former Nigerian captains Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal have been appointed to provide ambassadorial and technical support to the crew.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said: “The relationship between the Nigerian Football Association and Mr. Rohr has come to an end. We appreciate your services to the Super Eagles and Nigeria.
“We also want to thank the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports for their collaboration and guidance at all times.”
Eguavoen, a former Nigerian captain, was coach of the squad when he finished third at the African Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006. He was captain on the field when the Super Eagles lifted the African Cup for the first time on land away, in Tunisia, 27 years ago.
He will now take over the team when preparations begin for the 33rd African Cup of Nations to take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022, and until the appointment of a substantive head coach.
