The Sagamu Road Police Division said it arrested a 41-year-old man, Sikiru Kolawole, for allegedly possessing fresh human parts.
Lagos Police Command spokesperson Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was reportedly found with fresh human hands, intestines and skull at the Ojokoro Cemetery in Ikorodu.
“The Police Commissioner, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, for a diligent investigation and prosecution. “
Earlier, the president of the Ikorodu local government, Wasiu Adesina, who brought members of his cabinet to the scene of the alleged crime, said that the council will do whatever it takes to stop the cowardly act and their recidivism.
The head of the council immediately ordered the environment department to clear every part of the cemetery to avoid any black spots inside and outside.
He said the detained suspect would be treated in accordance with the law to deter others.
“While we take care of the living, the council has entrusted itself to tend to our dead and that is why we have rehabilitated the Ikorodu cemetery to international standards.
“I will ensure that proper security measures are in place and I will treat without mercy anyone who participates in such an illegitimate act in the cemetery.
“We have done a lot of rehabilitation, lighting the cemetery with solar energy, we provided a water system and perimeter fences,” he said.
Nurudeen Lawal, one of the cemetery’s local guards, said they confronted the suspect in combat before he was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. with a sack full of human parts as he tried to escape.
“We conduct surveillance around the cemetery at least three or four times in a shift to observe the surroundings.
“Suddenly, we started to hear a strange sound. Upon arrival, we saw the suspect with a loaded sack, so we challenged him on how he got in and his mission in the cemetery.
“During the interrogation, we challenged him to open his sack, he resisted and it resulted in a fight and (he) tried to use the weapon on him to scare us and allow him to flee.
“Afterwards, we grabbed him and brought him to the police station with the human parts for further questioning,” Lawal said.
