The Adamawa State House of Assembly has granted approval to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to form a transition committee for the state’s 21 local government councils.
The approval followed a request letter sent to the Assembly by the Governor and presented on the Assembly floor on Monday by the Spokesperson, Aminu Iya Abbas.
The Governor notified the Assembly that the mandate of the presidents of the local government councils who were sworn in for a period of two years will expire on Wednesday, December 8, and they will be required to hand over to the democratically elected councils at the expiration of their tenure.
The governor pointed out that such a democratic process of handover to the elected presidents would not be possible because the election had not taken place.
He said that he, as governor, must establish committees pending duly held elections.
He explained that the state’s Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) had previously communicated that it was not possible to hold the election because the materials for it were not ready.
According to the request letter, ADSIEC had explained that reusable materials such as urns, service vests, bags, kits recovered from the field after the last elections were completely vandalized by EndSARS looting.
The letter added that converting voting points into voting units and creating new ones has increased the number of reusable materials and ad-hoc staff, all of which, according to the letter, make council election impossible. by ADSIEC for now.
After deliberating on the governor’s request by legislators, the president put the motion to an oral vote and it was unanimously supported by the Assembly, thus giving the go-ahead for Fintiri to establish transition committees in the state’s 21 LGAs. .
