CLO Alerts I.G of police on unwholesome activities of Policemen at Obingwa LG

The civil liberties organisation ABA unit has drawn the attention of the Inspector General of Police and the general public to the unwholesome activities of officers of the Police Antiterrorism team at Osusu Amaukwu in Obingwa local government area in Abia state.
In a statement signed by the chairman, ABA unit of the Civil Liberties Organisation Charles Chinekezi, several reports alleged that men of the police team stationed at Osusu Amaukwu in Obingwa local government unleash their privately owned wild dogs on innocent members of the community in a bid to harass and extort money from them.
Victims in the hands of these police men includes motorists, motorcyclists, Keke operators, locals and other road users.
According to reports received by the CLO, this dastardly action began in 2020 and has continued till date.
As recently as Friday the 26th of November this year, an elderly woman in her late sixties was almost bitten to death by these dogs owned and used by the police team in Osusu Amaukwu in Obingwa LGA. Her crime was the failure to pay the stipulated illegal toll fee assigned by the policemen.
Earlier in the year an okada rider operating within the area who sped off and subsequently killed one of the dogs on illegal duty narrowly escaped death in the hands of the these policemen after he was given a hot and sustained chase until he escaped into Umuahia.
The civil liberties organisation notes that these privately procured dogs has continued to maul and injure innocent citizens who are made to suffer in silence over time in the hands of anarchist who parade as Federal policemen using government weapons as instruments of terror.
If these illegal activities are not checked at Obingwa, it may spark off another round of riots similar to the now infamous End SARS protests which rocked the nation last year the CLO chairman warned. The nation continues to reel from the aftermath of the End SARS riots making public policy formulation and implementation much more difficult.
‘The Civil Liberties Organisation being a reputable human rights organisation which pursues public peace at all levels at all times hereby urgently enjoin Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police(I. G. P.) to use his good offices to mount a full scale investigation into these illegal activities of police officers who are currently painting the Nigerian Police in bad light; prosecute and punish them accordingly to serve as a deterrent to other such officers of our uniformed services’, the statement concluded.
