Women journalists in Yobe state under the auspices of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) have said that the enactment of the Law Prohibiting Violence Against Persons is key to ending all forms of violence against women. women in the state.
This came to the fore when Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Ahmad, president of NAWOJ in the state, took other members of the Association to the Emir’s Palace in Damaturu on a promotional visit as part of 16 days of activism to mark International Day of the Elimination of violence against women.
Ms Ahmad told the Monarch that they were at the Palace to seek his support and cooperation in convincing the Chief Executive of State to enact the Law for the Prohibition of Violence against Persons (VAPP) approved by the House of Assembly of the State.
He said this became imperative considering the growing effects and cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and the need to end it in society.
In response, the Emir of Damaturu, Alhaji Shehu Hashimi II Ibn Umar Al-Amin El-Kanemi praised members of the pen profession for being at the forefront in the fight against the threat of a lifetime.
He also informed visiting journalists that since then his emirate has been integrated into the agenda of the fight against gender violence and other forms of abuse against women, and assured to partner with them in the task of ending the monster with the head of hydra in the state.
The Emir, however, called on all critical stakeholders to come together and fight the nasty trend of rape cases in society.
Similarly, the women led by their president sensitized leaders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers about the need to participate in the fight to end gender-based violence in the state.
