Unknown gunmen who invaded a medium security custody center in Jos, the Plateau state capital, have been caught by security officers currently on the prison premises.
Newslodge had reported that some criminal elements suspected of being bandits had broken into the premises on Sunday night with sophisticated weapons and fired sporadically at the premises.
A statement from the spokesperson for the Nigeria NCoS Correctional Service, CC Francis Enobore, said the gunmen were trapped after heavy fire from security officers who immediately cordoned off the courtyard.
The statement says; “The Medium Security Custody Center in Jos, Plateau State was attacked by armed men who reportedly broke into the facility in large numbers with sophisticated weapons.
“The invaders were said to have arrived at the Custody Center around 5:20 pm and immediately made their way to the main gate where they confronted armed squad personnel in a firefight before storming into the courtyard.
“Although they managed to enter the courtyard, they are nevertheless trapped inside as the men from the brother security services were immediately mobilized to help the armed guards cordon off the perimeter wall and the entire area.
“The reinforcement of the Service’s response brigade has also been mobilized to the center.
“The situation is currently under control, as the attackers’ firing power is being subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies. The update will be available as the event unfolds, “he added.
