The Nigerian government confirmed on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the purchase and donation of vehicles, worth 1.4 billion naira, to the neighboring Republic of Niger.
the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmedtold reporters after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the donation was to help Niger address its security concerns.
She said such donations from Nigeria to its neighbors were common.
Ms. Ahmed said that it is the president’s prerogative to make such decisions after careful assessment of the situation.
“Let me say that over time, Nigeria has had to support its neighbors, especially immediate neighbors, to improve their ability to protect their countries as far as we are concerned,” he said while answering questions.
“This is not the first time that Nigeria has helped the Republic of Niger, Cameroon or Chad.
“The president makes an assessment of what is required based on the request of their presidents. Such requests are approved and interventions are provided.
“It’s to enhance their ability to protect their countries, security-wise, and also Nigeria.”
Ms. Ahmed said that she understood Nigerians’ concerns about the matter since it was made public.
“Nigerians have the right to ask questions, but also the president has a responsibility to make an assessment of what is best for the country and I myself cannot question the decision.
“I have said that this is not the first time and that Nigeria as a country has provided an intervention to our neighbors. It is in Nigeria’s best interest to do so.”
