Oil driller Oando Plc said on Monday that its clean energy unit has signed an agreement with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to provide the renewable energy that will facilitate the deployment of electric public transport buses, charging centers and supporting charging infrastructure.
Oando Clean Energy Limited agreed to the Public-private partnership agreement at the end of April, Oando said in a statement, paving the way for the achievement of the Lagos state government’s goal of implementing an electric vehicle infrastructure system which will in turn ensure a mega-city road transport system that is sustainable.

The vehicles on its roads have increased by 400% in the last 10 years, and the strong possibility of further increases due to population growth will surely trigger higher tons of carbon emissions, with the transport sector accounting for 23% to 30% in annual CO2 emissions.
“Aware that transport is a key emitter of greenhouse gases in Nigeria, we developed a strategy to reduce greenhouse gases by 50 per cent,” said Frederic Oladeinde, Lagos State Transport Commissioner.

“A key component of this strategy was to identify and develop a stronger public transportation system for Lagos that would include rail and waterways, among others.”
The move is seen as reducing the deficit of public transport buses available to Lagos’ growing number of commuters.
Abimbola Akinajo, head of LAMATA, said: “Oando Clean Energy came to us with a comprehensive solution that went beyond electric mass transit buses to include supporting infrastructure, and this was key for us as the full scope of an EV support ecosystem is the only way to achieve success.”
