Oumou Sangaré is a musician from West Africa who has won a lot of awards. She was born in 1968 in Bamako, Mali to Sidiki Sangaré and Aminata Diakité. In 1986, she was asked by Bamba Dambele to go on tour with his traditional group, Djobila Percussions, to Europe as the group’s lead singer, and she agreed. In Bamako, Mali’s popular music arranger Amadou Ba Guindo helped her form her own band and write new songs and music that sound like Wassoulou, but in the present day.
After two years of experimenting, her first album, Moussolou, which means “women,” was born. The 6-track album came out in 1989, and it sold more than 200,000 copies. This made Sangaré a big star in Mali and other parts of Africa. In 1991, a British record company, World Circuit, bought the rights to her album Moussolou outside of Africa. She joined the label through Ali Farka Touré, who helped her sign up. This album is called Ko Sira, which means “Marriage today.” She put it out in 1993. Records for the album were done in Berlin, and it was released by the World Circuit label.
She went on a tour of Africa and Europe in 1993. When she came back to the United States next, she went with the Africa Fete package tour. When Sangaré released her third album, Worotan, in the United Kingdom in 1996, it was a big hit. It stayed at the top of the European world music charts for months.
