Provide relief, not threat, Apongbon merchants tell government
Sanwo-Olu made this known during his visit to the area to inspect the fire damage at Eko Bridge, Ebute Ero and surroundings on March 23, 2022.
The governor lamented the damage caused by the fire to the bridge, which opened the slabs that divided the Eko bridge in the Apongbon section, towards Lagos Island.
He spoke to the raders who once occupied the affected area and told them that they must leave for the good of the state.
The governor reiterated that merchants will not be allowed to continue occupying under the bridge and that the 7-day ultimatum is upheld.
Sanwo-Olu also visited Obalende under the bridge to assess the situation and prevent future fire disasters.
MEANWHILE, some shopkeepers around the bridge told Newslodge that they are unaware of the seven-day ultimatum and that if such a pronouncement were made, it would be inhumane to evict them within days.
A shopkeeper, Oladunjoye Oluwaseyifunmi, said: “Almost everything sold under the bridge is used for baking cakes and bread. So, no one can give an accurate answer to the cause of hell, but everything that is sold here has chemical components.
“Most of us have been to Western countries and we see the way the government treats its people. Therefore, this is a time to resolve something for the affected people and not to threaten them.”
