The 2024 Human Sciences Program (HFSP) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is a prestigious international fellowship that provides early-career scholars with the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in the life sciences.

This program aims to support innovative and creative research projects that address fundamental questions in the life sciences, particularly regarding the interface between biology and other disciplines such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science.

The HFSP Postdoctoral Fellowship program is highly competitive, and successful applicants receive three years of funding to conduct their research at top research institutions around the world.

The HFSP Fellowship Program supports proposals for pioneering and potentially transformative research in the life sciences. Applications for high-risk projects are particularly encouraged. Projects should be interdisciplinary in nature and should challenge existing paradigms using new methods and technologies. Scientifically, they must address an important problem or barrier to progress in the field.

Eligibility criteria:

A candidate who is not a national of an HFSP member (see list below) may only apply to work at a research institution in a member state. A candidate with the nationality of one of the Member States can apply to work in a research institution in any country.

Applicants must propose to work in a different country from the country in which they did their previous doctoral work or first postdoctoral studies. For those institutions that are not classified as national, i.e. international or extraterritorial institutions such as EMBL, ICPT or ICGEB, the country in which the laboratory is located will be considered the host country.

2) Doctorate degree

A research doctorate (PhD) or doctoral degree equivalent to a PhD with equivalent experience in basic research (eg MD or MD) must be awarded at the start of the fellowship. This is not required when applying. By “degree awarded” we mean that you received your certificate for the degree. “Award Date” is the date on the official doctoral document. Please refer to the Application Guidelines for information if you have not yet obtained a PhD.

3) Research publications

Applicants must have at least one lead author publication by the LOI submission deadline which can be a manuscript (1) published in a recognized preprint repository, (2) accepted for publication, (3) in press or (4) ) has already been published by a peer-reviewed journal.

However, a fellowship application can only be submitted at the full proposal stage with a published research article in accordance with points (2) to (4) above. HFSP only accepts original, peer-reviewed, full-length English-language research publications in which the applicant must be either a solo author, first author, or joint first author. In a joint first author paper, the applicant need not be listed first, but the equal contribution of the authors must be clearly stated in all cases.

In some cases, standard publishing practice makes first authorship impossible (e.g., alphabetical listing of authors); These circumstances must be made clear in the application.
