The Senate claims that there is no plan to remove the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as reported by some media outlets.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
Mr Adaramodu was reacting to a report in a national newspaper that some senators are Graphing of Saudi Arabia to accuse Mr. Akpabio, who took office on June 13.
The alleged initiative to remove the president of the Senate has persisted since June, after the election of the main officials of the upper house, on the basis that Akpabio will be a “rubber stamp” for the presidency.
But none of the senators have confirmed that they are making plans to remove the Senate president.
Adaramodu said the upper legislative house is united and an impeachment trial against the Senate President cannot take place.
“We have just drawn our attention to satanic verses distributed in a section of the media, about alleged and illusory plots to change leadership in the Senate.
“The Nigerian Senate is a united and fraternal family. This imaginative composition is in the realm of the false and fallacious story of 100 million per legislator. It should be noted that the 10th Senate, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, has diligently discharged its legislative and constitutional duties,” he said.
Bills, motions approved
The Senate spokesperson noted that since Akpabio became Senate President, the upper house has passed many bills and motions in the interest of Nigerians.
“In a span of less than 60 legislative days, the Senate passed bills and motions that improve lives. “He has selected and confirmed service chiefs and ministers, among others, in addition to very essential supervisory functions.”
He urged Nigerians to ignore reports that there are moves to remove Mr. Akpabio.
“We urge the fifth columnists, who no doubt operate outside the Senate, desperate to cause discord through media stunts and thus clip the wings of Nigeria’s democracy, to be careful.
“The Senate must be allowed fresh air to settle into its national tasks so that the Nigerian project can move forward. The media should also be careful not to be used as a manual tool for these peddlers of fake and bad news.”
The Senate is currently on recess and will reconvene on September 26.
