The Electoral Petitions Tribunal of the National and State House of Assembly, sitting in Kano, has confirmed the election of Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), representing Kano South Senatorial District.
He Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr. Sumaila winner of the Kano South senatorial elections held on February 25.
Kawu won the senatorial elections with 319,557 votes. He defeated Kabiru Gaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 192,518 votes.
APC candidate Gaya challenged Sumaila’s victory before the election petition court.
On Monday, the court dismissed Mr Gaya’s petition as grossly incompetent and fined him N200,000.
The Chief Justice, R. Odogu, held that the petitioner failed to discharge the burden of proof against the respondent.
“We find no merit in this petitioner and accordingly dismiss it.

“Similarly, we affirm the declaration of Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the NNPP as winner of the Kano South Senatorial District election held on February 25, 2023.
“The sum of N200,000 is hereby awarded in favor of the respondents against the petitioner,” the judge ruled.
