Four brothers lost their lives on Friday when a building collapsed at Agric Quarters on Mgbemena Road, Coal Camp in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m., Newslodge has learned.
The deceased siblings were found to be between the ages of eight and 15.
The president of the Enugu Capital Territory Development AuthorityUche Anya, who visited the area on Saturday, said the building was approved for animal husbandry but was converted to residential.
Anya said that the building was unhealthy for human habitation and should not have been occupied by residents.
“As soon as we received the intelligence, we rushed to the location. Four children died in the episode. Apparently they say that livestock and poultry farming are being done there, but it turned out that there are rooms that are being occupied by human beings and there must have been a population of more than 200 people there, ”he said.
“The fence was totally unacceptable. Nobody does that and unfortunately the people who died in the tragedy are innocent children and it is very painful,” Anya added.

The president said the agency would continue to educate state residents about the need to live in a more conducive environment to prevent such occurrences in the future.
He promised that the agency’s compliance unit would ensure that structures built by owners and contractors strictly adhere to the approval plan.
He later ordered the residents of the collapsed building and four other buildings near the area to immediately vacate the buildings.
