A member of the House of Representatives, Solomon Maren, says that more than 100 people have been killed by terrorists in the Plateau State in the last 48 hours.
Maren, who represents the Mangu/Bokkos federal constituency in the north central state, said this at a news conference in the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said the killings occurred in his constituency during attacks at different times on villages in the area.
The lawmaker said the attackers also burned houses, farms and stored farm supplies, adding that the latest attacks brought the death toll to 200 in the last four months.
Mr. Maren expressed his dissatisfaction with the federal government’s effort to provide security for the people of the state. He said that the army has not been well equipped to fight the terrorists.
“I find it appropriate at this time to inform the world about the unfortunate events in my constituency, the Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency of Plateau State. In the past two days, more than 100 people, mostly women and children, have been massacred and slaughtered in cold blood by terrorists during an unprovoked night attack and their houses burned, including food, granaries and seedlings.
“These murders are one of many in the constituency, where more than 200 people have been killed in the four months leading up to this one.
“The government can claim that it is doing the best it can, but it is not good enough, since it is not able to stop the killings for years. However, I congratulate the few brave officers who worked without sufficient weapons, but turned themselves in to save lives,” he said.
Maken also flayed President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to condemn cowardly acts perpetrated by terrorists.
To provide relief to the victims, Mr. Maren urged the relevant government agencies to provide relief material for the people.
“The onus is on the president to first condemn the cowardly act, which we hope he will, and immediately proceed to protect life and property, which is the primary responsibility of government.
“Therefore, I urge the president to order law enforcement agencies to move into the area effective immediately to stop the killings, as well as the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and other good-spirited organizations to also come in with relief materials for the injured survivors of the dastardly attack.
“While calling for support across the board, I condemn the attack in its entirety and call for calm and no one should take the law into their own hands.
“I sympathize with the government and people of Plateau State, Miskhakam Mwagavul, the Governor-elect of Plateau State and indeed the Mangu LGA Chairman in the attack and pray for the repose of the souls of those killed,” he said. .
Buhari, who campaigned in 2015 to address insecurity, will step down after eight years as president. However, the security situation has not improved under his command.
