Diri Gives Cash Gift to Victorious Bayelsa Queens, African Women's Wrestling Champions

Appeals for upward revision of NWFL prize money

Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri awarded cash rewards to Bayelsa Queens, winners of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six competition held in Benin, Edo State, as well as medalists in the just concluded African Wrestling Championship in Morocco.

The governor announced the cash prizes when receiving the athletes on Wednesday at the Government House, Yenagoa.

Describing Bayelsa Queens’ performance in the tournament as excellent, Diri noted that no other team has surpassed their tournament-winning feat as they won all five matches and won four individual awards.

The governor urged the team members to keep up the winning pace, and assured that the government will provide them with the necessary support so that they can have a successful start in their quest for continental glory later in the year, as Nigeria’s representative in the African Women’s Football Championship. .

Diri also urged the sponsors of the women’s football league to have prize money revised upwards to encourage the development of women’s football in the country.

“It is on this note that the following rewards are announced and this money must be released before the continental clash.

“Bayelsa Queens first team will each go home with N500,000 and this is because we are going to prepare for the continental championship, when you come back victorious then you will know what your government will do for you.

“The Technical Advisor will go home with N700,000, Assistant Coaches N500,000 each, Management Team Secretary, N500,000, President N500,000. The team and other team members are 300,000 each, and the members of the Board, 200,000 each.

“Because we have just received all their laurels, the most valuable player will receive an additional N100,000 from the state government and an additional N200,000 from me, the highest goalscorer will receive an additional N100,000 and an additional 200,000 from me. The best goalkeeper will get N100,000 and an additional N200,000 from me.”

Diri also expressed her delight at the Bayelsa contingent at the 2022 African Wrestling Championships in El Jedida, Morocco, where the wrestlers collected one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Earlier, the Commissioner for the Development of Youth and Sports, Daniel Igali, thanked the governor for his support to the sports sector and said that it has resulted in the outstanding performance of athletes in various local and international competitions.
