The All Progressive Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary in Akwa Ibom Stateon Thursday, it suffered a delay as rival factions of the party were reportedly fighting for control of voting materials.
The two factions are holding parallel primaries to choose the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the state’s 2023 general election.
The faction backed by a former Niger Delta Affairs Minister and party presidential hopeful, Godswill Akpabio, is holding its primary elections in its own office in Ekpo Obot Street, Uyo.
The faction loyal to a former national secretary of the party, John Akpanudoedehe, celebrates at Sheergrace Arena, Nsikak Eduok Avenue, Uyo.
Akwa Ibom State Resident Election Commissioner Mike Igini and State Police Commissioner Andrew Amiengheme are at Sheergrace Arena with their officials to monitor the primary election to be held by the faction loyal to Mr. Akpanudoedehe .
INEC officials and the police arrived at the scene around 6:45 pm and have been waiting for the APC officials to start the exercise.
At the time of the presentation of this report, APC officials had not yet arrived.
There is a heavy security presence, with the police preventing people from entering the compound.
