A member of the Ogun House of Assembly, Sola Adams, called out for the elephants encroaching on farmland, adding that they also injured a farmer in Itashin in the East Ijebu Local Government Area of the state. .
Mr. Adams, speaking during the plenary session in Abeokuta, noted that the recent incident of elephants attacking villagers in his constituency remained a concern.
The legislator stated that the injured farmer was receiving treatment at the Ijebu Ode General Hospital, and called on the relevant agencies to do what is necessary and return the elephants to where they should be.
In response, Olakunle Oluomo, the Speaker, condemned the invasion of the elephants.
The speaker advised farmers to stop further encroachment on the elephants’ natural habitat.
According to him, the elephant incursion problem in the city that occurred in Itasin in Ijebu East, required the state Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry to involve the Conservative Foundation of Nigeria.
“This is to preserve the species and the entire ecosystem,” he said.
Also during the plenary session, the speaker challenged the State Governor’s Special Adviser on Security Affairs, Olusola Subair, to explore the State Security Trust Fund for the acquisition of more security apparatus throughout the state.
The speaker added that more security devices were needed, especially in waterfront areas to enhance the safety of residents’ lives and property.
He made the call while responding to an introduction from his deputy, Akeem Balogun, and Deputy Chief Whip, Olusola Adams.
Lawmakers discussed the need to tighten security around the border areas with Lagos and Ondo states, especially around Ode-Omi, Iwopin in Ogun Waterside and Imobi in Ijebu East local government areas, respectively. (YAYA)
